For the most part, Gala Concert shines admirably in a 1080i/AVC 1.78:1 transfer. Detail is remarkably good here, capturing everything from lacquer differences on some of the violins and cellos to (as strange as it may sound) the hair on certain players' hands. There is not a lot of color to talk about here, other than the reds in the hall itself, which pop nicely. I found fleshtones to be just a little on the anemic side (could it be that infamous Russian weather?), and at times, especially in the long shots, certain areas were just slightly washed out, due perhaps to stage lighting issues. In closeups, there's nothing to complain about in terms of clarity and line detail; in fact, it's rather alarming at times. You will be able to count the hairs on Virsaladzo's head, for example, should you be so inclined. Contrast is excellent throughout the concert, with black levels consistent. Both PCM mixes offer uncompressed audio, one in 2.0 and the other in 5.1. This is a brilliantly recorded concert, with what sounds like very discrete microphone placement throughout the hall. Surround channels in the 5.1 mix are consistently used for both tutti passages and individual featured moments, while featured soloists are typically placed front and center in the soundfield. Dynamic range here is stupendously good, with everything from the fortissimo brass of the opening Shostakovich and closing Rachmaninoff to the more lyrical moments of some of the sung segments brilliantly reproduced. Clarity is outstanding and textures are well rendered, offering some pleasing in-depth listening, especially in some of the more adventurous moments of the program.
